RULES FOR CHORAL COMPETITION ON THE AIR

ELIGIBILITY

• Only choirs of the 4 vicariates of the Diocese of Alaminos are eligible to join the contest.
• Each participating choir should have at least 12 members (not including the conductor and the non-singing accompanist). A participating choir should have at most 30 singers. It is an open category contest for all ages.
• All participants should be bonafide residents (or “bonafide members”) of their home parish. Any violation of this rule will render a choir ineligible. The organizers and the judges have the right to demand a proof of residence for any choir members whose residency is in question.
• The two best choir groups will be the representatives of their vicariate.
• The contest will be in December 4, 2010 at St. Joseph Cathedral in Alaminos City.

REGISTRATION

The choirmaster of each competing choir shall submit the following information to the contest organizers:
1. Name of the Choir
2. Home Parish
3. Choirmaster’s Name
4. Total number of singers (including: breakdown of sections and numbers of accompanists, if separated from the singers).
5. Names of participating singer (per section), including understudies/ trainees
6. Name/s of accomapanist/s, if the accompanist is not part of the singers. Only those names which have been submitted to the organizers will be allowed to join the contest.
(Or the choirmaster shall indicate the following information in the registration form)

REPERTOIRE

• The choirmaster should submit the list of songs to be performed at the contest,
• Each repertoire should be composed of the following:
o The mandatory contest piece (see next item)
o At least two pieces of contrasting styles, which will allow the choir to demonstrate their capabilities.
o All choirs are require to perform the following choice piece: [Name of the Piece] [Name of Composer / writer / arranger]. Each choir may secure a copy of the contest piece from the organizers.
o The total of performing time (should have at least 10 minutes, and) should not exceed 15 minutes. The jury have the prerogative to stop the choir from singing once the time limit has been reached, even if the has not yet finished singing.
o Each exceeding minute will merit a corresponding deduction of 5 points on the choir’s final score.

CONTEST PROPER

• The order of the participating choirs shall be determined by lots, which shall be drawn immediately before the contest proper.
• The performance of each choir shall be times from the first note of each song, and shall be paused at the end of each song. Breaks between songs shall not be counted towards the choir’s time.

ADJUDICATION

• The jury shall be composed of [at least] 3 persons with extensive musical background, preferably professional musicians with choral music experience.
• There will be one chairman among the jurors, who shall act as the representative of the entire jury.
• The jury shall use the following criteria in judging each choir.
o Voice quality - 30%
o Interpretation - 30%
o Projection - 20%
o Programming - 20%
• In determining the final outcome of the contest, the average score of each conteststants’ scores will be computed, and then ranked accordingly.
• In the event of a tie in the average score, the judges shall determine whether to break the tie or not.

PRIZES

• All participating choir shall receive a certificate of participation (and freebies).
• The choir with the highest average score shall be awarded the FIRST PRIZE which includes a cash prize of P10, 000.00 and a trophy (among others).
• The choir garnering the second – highest average shall be awarded the Second Prize of
P7, 000.00 The choir next – highest average shall be awarded Third Prize of P5, 000.00 Consolation Prize to non winning groups P1,000.00
• The jurors will also award the following special prizes:
1. Best Interpretation of the Contest Piece – to be awarded to the choir with the best rendition of the contest piece.
2. Best Interpretation of a choice piece – to be awarded to the choir with the best rendition of a piece other than the mandatory contest piece.
3. Best Conductor – to be awarded to the outstanding conductor of the competition. In determining the awardees for the special prizes, the jury have the right to determine their own criteria or standards. The special awardees shall be determined by deliberation, not by a separate point-system.

ARBITRATION AND OTHER MATTERS

• The juror’s decision on the outcome of the competition is final and irrevocable. Competing choirs or their choirmasters cannot appeal the results of the contest.
• In the event of a dispute, the concerned choirmaster shall approach the jury, who shall decide on the matter concerned. Their decision is final and un-appealable.
• The jurors, through the chairman, have the right to modify any of the criteria or the rules. Such changes shall be communicated in advance to the organizing committee and the choirmasters of each choir before the contest proper. No such changes shall be allowed during and after the contest proper.

 

Vocal Quality – 30%
Is the blending good? Are the voices well-modulated and pleasing in the standpoint of choral singing?

Interpretation – 30%
Were the songs interpreted the way that they should be sung? Was justice given to the melodic lines and to the text of the music, and were the expressions appropriate?

Projection – 20%
Was the singing loud and soft enough? Did the singers projected and presented themselves appropriately on stage?

Programming – 20%
“Programming” refers to the selection of pieces, in case the choirs can sing more than one songs other than the mandatory piece (the question answered here is, were the choices good ones? Does the mandatory piece “blend” or “fit in” with other piece?)
